“Little troublemaker, did you really cancel the engagement without even blinking your eyes?”
Ye Zhou followed Tang Guo with a complex expression on his face. He thought she would play some tricks, but he didn’t expect her to be so decisive. She found his elder brother and directly cancelled the engagement without any hesitation.
The expected conspiracies and tricks didn’t materialize. Instead of being happy about it, he felt empty inside.
“Well, even though our engagement has been canceled, we still have a blood relationship. You can still call me ‘cousin’ and if anyone bullies you in the future, you can come find me,” Ye Zhou said.
Tang Guo turned around, a faint smile appearing on her delicate face, still proud as ever. “No need. You got what you wanted. From now on, I won’t bother you anymore.”
“Cousin…” Ye Zhou looked bitter. “I know you resent me. That engagement was just a childhood joke. I never thought you would take it seriously and even made our father agree to it.”
“If I had known, I would never have joked about it.”
Back then, when Tang Guo was only five years old and he was seven, he saw her for the first time and thought she was beautiful. Thinking about the bride mentioned in the plays, he jokingly asked Tang Guo to be his bride.
Little did he know that she would remember it all these years.
Tang Guo took a few steps towards Ye Zhou, chin held high. “Since it was just a joke to you, why did you agree to it in the first place? You could have refused.”
“If you had refused, none of this would have happened. I wouldn’t have waited for over ten years, only to be left with nothing. The second year after we made the engagement promise, you left without looking back. Even when you returned to Pingcheng, you didn’t meet me. If I wanted to see you, I had to ask our elder cousin for a portrait.”
“You say you didn’t understand when you were young, but you should understand now that you’ve grown up, right? If you had refused earlier, you wouldn’t have given me so much hope.”
Ye Zhou felt guilty and didn’t know what to say.
“Alright, I’ve figured it out. I won’t bother you anymore. Let’s consider the past nonexistent.”
Tang Guo withdrew her gaze and turned around to leave.
Ye Zhou watched her slowly disappearing figure, feeling somewhat lost.
“Ah Zhou, Guo’er is a good girl. Although she can be a bit stubborn, she was wholeheartedly devoted to you. You really hurt her, no wonder she insisted on breaking off the engagement,” Ye Fan stepped forward and shook his head upon seeing Ye Zhou’s hesitant expression. “If you don’t like her, it’s better to end the engagement and not delay her any further.”
“But Ah Zhou, do you really not like her? Guo’er may have a stubborn personality, and now that she’s broken off the engagement, it means she doesn’t want any involvement with you anymore. Even if you want to change your mind in the future, there won’t be an opportunity.”
“Elder brother, you’re overthinking it. I only have beautiful scenery, good food, and cultivation in my heart. My greatest wish is to shatter the void, not to be entangled in love affairs. It’s better that she broke off the engagement to avoid being hindered by me.”
Ye Zhou frowned, “I’m just a bit worried. Why did she suddenly break off the engagement? She’s so stubborn. I don’t know what happened in these past few months that made her change her mind.”
“Now that she’s broken off the engagement, don’t go out all the time. Keep an eye on her and prevent anyone from bullying Guo’er. Although she’s our cousin, you should understand her current situation.”
Ye Zhou turned back, puzzled. “What’s wrong? Isn’t our cousin in a good position? She’s the legitimate young miss of the Tang family. Is there someone who would dare to bully her?”
Ye Fan smiled faintly, disagreeing with Ye Zhou’s thoughts. “Who told you that a legitimate young miss wouldn’t be bullied?”
