“Interesting,” Tang Guo said. She was becoming more and more curious about the reason she was traveling through these worlds.
In the blink of an eye, ten days passed.
Outside the city, only Ning Luo’s family remained. Ning Luo and her mates were still holding out.
Every day, Ming Jiu would fly up to observe the situation inside the city. He did not dare to fly over the city itself and could only watch from afar, yet even so, he could see a city that was incomparably prosperous. There were houses he had never seen before, and the beastmen inside wore beautiful clothes and jewelry they had never owned, necklaces far more attractive than bone ornaments.
From time to time, the scent of food drifted out from the city. Ning Luo’s family could all smell it. Her children, in particular, stared inside with greedy expressions, swallowing again and again.
Ming Jiu told them what he had observed. Everyone was visibly stunned. They could not understand how, in just a little over ten years, the outside world had changed so drastically.
Ning Luo’s children were full of envy. Her mates exchanged looks, equally confused as to how the Mata Kingdom had become so powerful.
“Mother, it smells so good inside. It smells even better than your meat soup. I really want to eat it.”
“I want to eat it too.”
“It smells amazing.”
“Mother, can we go in, eat, and then come back out?”
Ning Luo’s face turned pale. Looking at the longing expressions on her dozen or so children, her heart ached. The smell really was wonderful, was it not? It was normal for the children to want to eat it. She could not blame them. It was she who had led them to endure so much hardship.
“Mother, didn’t the guards say we have two chances? We can go in once, then come out. That way we still keep one chance. We can go in twice to eat.”
“That’s right, that’s right. Big brother, you’re so smart. That’s a great idea.”
Ning Luo pressed her lips together and did not agree.
Ming Jiu had described the inside of the city too well, almost like a human world. That made her afraid. Two chances? She was afraid that if they went in once and came out, they would not be willing to come out the second time.
“If the children like it that much, how about letting them go in first, then come out?” Gaien suggested.
Ning Luo shook her head. “No. No one is allowed to go in.”
“No one is allowed to go in. Whoever dares to go in, I will never forgive them.”
Seeing this, Aoli could not help but laugh. “She is scared.”
And who would not be scared in Ning Luo’s position?
“Gaien, let’s go back to the forest. Our family will live in the forest forever from now on.”
Gaien and the others could not bear to see Ning Luo upset. They hurried to comfort her, saying they would take her back to the forest and never come out again. The children, afraid of angering her, left reluctantly, turning their heads back again and again.
Ming Jiu also glanced back at the towering city wall. Recalling what he had seen inside, envy appeared in his eyes. Life inside the city was truly appealing. But he could not long for city life at the cost of abandoning Luo Luo.
“Are they really leaving just like that?” Aoli asked, puzzled and somewhat unwilling.
Two days later, however, Aoli laughed again.
It turned out that those Lado tribe members who had entered the city requested to leave once more. The guards had said they were allowed two chances. They wanted to go out and then come back in, and afterward, they would never leave again.
