She wasn’t just a real village girl, but someone who had also contributed to Tang County.
As Song Ye wrapped his arm around Tang Guo and walked inside, everyone who saw them greeted them with friendly smiles and called out, “Director Song brought Madam Song to dine too?”
Watching the admiration in those people’s eyes made Chen Ying extremely uncomfortable.
What made her even more upset was that Xie Shijun was focused entirely on entertaining Song Ye and didn’t consider her at all. He didn’t even come to hold her hand or walk with her. She had to walk in by herself, making them look nothing like a married couple.
Xie Shijun was even more frustrated. He had no idea what was wrong with Chen Ying today. Her expression was off, and she wasn’t even greeting their guest. In the past, whenever he had guests, Chen Ying had never acted like this. She used to be especially warm and welcoming.
Back when they were still in the military, all comrades envied him for having such an understanding, capable, and virtuous wife.
But ever since returning to Tang County, Chen Ying had been acting strangely.
Maybe she still hadn’t adjusted yet.
Xie Shijun found an excuse for her. After all, she was the woman who had accompanied him for so many years. He couldn’t completely deny her just because of a few small mistakes.
Throughout the meal, Chen Ying remained somewhat distracted.
Especially when Song Ye, during dinner, would pick up food for Tang Guo and peel shrimp for her, his attentive manner stung Chen Ying’s eyes.
In her past life, they had spent a lifetime locked in mutual resentment. She had never known that Song Ye could be so thoughtful.
And now, after all these years, Song Ye, almost thirty, didn’t show a trace of aging on his face. Instead, he had grown more mature and handsome, exuding a magnetic charm.
Is this really the same Song Ye who, at thirty, had accomplished nothing, spent his days facing the dirt with his back to the sky, woke up at dawn to farm, came home at sunset to eat, closed the door and went straight to bed, and never spoke more than a few words to her?
He was different.
Completely different from the past life.
When this man smiled, especially when he smiled only at Tang Guo, it was incredibly captivating and touching.
Those beautiful eyes were filled with deep love and affection for Tang Guo alone.
This version of Song Ye was someone she had never known.
It was as if the man she thought she had known in her previous life was someone she had never truly understood.
Chen Ying felt suffocated just sitting there, as if she couldn’t breathe.
“Ah Ye, don’t worry about me. You eat too.” Tang Guo picked up a piece of shrimp and brought it to Song Ye’s mouth. Of course, Song Ye didn’t refuse his wife’s kindness and took the shrimp directly from her chopsticks. “Guo Guo, you eat too.”
Xie Shijun: “……”
“You two have such a good relationship.” Xie Shijun couldn’t help but compliment them. His admiration for Song Ye continued to grow.
To have achieved so much and yet still treat his wife with unwavering affection. This was the kind of man people truly respected.
He had seen plenty of men who, once they gained a little success, would change and abandon the wife who had supported them through hard times. As a soldier, one of his core beliefs was loyalty. To remain devoted to the one you loved just as you did at the beginning.
He had always tried to treat Chen Ying better, but Chen Ying seemed to have less love for him. In the end, all he could offer was loyalty. At the very least, he would never betray Chen Ying on his own.
If Chen Ying refused to change and kept pushing him away, no matter what he did, it would be useless.
Especially after he decided to transfer out of the military, Chen Ying’s warmth toward him faded significantly. As much as he didn’t want to admit it, he still had to acknowledge that Chen Ying’s feelings for him were probably more driven by self-interest.
