Chen Ying was dazed and pale as Xie Shijun helped her back to the room. Xu Qiulan was still a bit worried and told her to rest well, then turned around to buy a chicken, planning to stew something good to nourish her daughter-in-law.
No matter what, Chen Ying had followed Xie Shijun in the army and even gave birth to a son and daughter for the Xie family. Now that the family was doing well, there was no reason to let their daughter-in-law suffer.
Chen Ying knew none of this. Her mind was full of just one thought, impossible.
Impossible!
That man Song Ye, how could he have achieved such success?
A man who had nothing to his name had become the creator of all Tang County and was regarded as a symbol of belief by everyone in Tangjia Village.
Just now, when Xu Qiulan spoke of Song Ye, the pride in her voice was evident to Chen Ying.
And that one line from Xie Shijun, “I met him once before. At that time, I could already tell that Educated Youth Song wasn’t a simple man.”
What made Chen Ying feel the worst was that Xie Shijun had acknowledged Song Ye’s excellence. His tone even hinted that he considered himself not as good as Song Ye, and there was even a faint look of admiration in his eyes.
That made her extremely uncomfortable.
She had schemed so carefully, even at great risk, to orchestrate a marriage between Song Ye and Tang Guo just to get rid of him and find a man a thousand times better.
When he had been with her, he was dull, stubborn, and completely useless. Why was it that after she severed ties with him, that man suddenly became so outstanding, to the point that she couldn’t even hope to reach him?
“Shijun, I’m going to make some soup for Yingzi. About your career transfer, Director Song even asked me about it. He said when you return, you can go find him. He has some connections in the city. There’s no way into Tang County, but I think the city isn’t bad at all. It’s still better than the neighboring county,” Xu Qiulan said as she came out of the kitchen. “Bring a few things and go visit him. The village has changed so much, and Director Song still remembers you. We can’t be too rude. No matter what, we should show our gratitude.”
Xie Shijun nodded. He understood how personal connections worked. The reason he couldn’t get promoted was, first, because he had no opportunity to earn merit, and second, because he didn’t have strong enough connections. No matter what, he just couldn’t move up.
Xu Qiulan had already prepared the gifts. Xie Shijun picked them up and went to find Song Ye.
When Xie Shijun arrived, Tang Guo and Song Ye were both at home. The couple was sweetly playing with a cat in the courtyard. What greeted Xie Shijun when he was invited in was a warm and cozy scene.
A beautiful woman sat in a chair, holding an equally beautiful little kitten. Beside her crouched a man who, to Xie Shijun, gave the impression of a big cat competing with the small one for affection.
That thought made Xie Shijun chuckle.
“We have a guest.” Tang Guo nudged Song Ye. A grown man getting jealous of a cat, there was no one else like him.
Song Ye quickly stood up, and the warm atmosphere instantly vanished.
As Xie Shijun carefully observed the two of them, he felt a bit of amazement. They truly were a perfect match of talent and beauty. When he left back then, the two had already been young, and now their appearances hardly seemed to have changed at all.
The only things that had changed were their surroundings, their clothes, and the aura that Song Ye carried.
As for Tang Guo, he had been married for a long time now. That fleeting illusion from the past had long been cast aside. Besides, the two were now the benefactors of the entire Tangjia Village. As a proper soldier, there was no way he could entertain improper thoughts.

Lolz didn’t he accomplish nothing in his previous life because you’re a shrew and destroyed his materials for study and had nothing else to offer but your body he didn’t want? I mean Song Ye didn’t want to marry in the village. You forced yourself on him more or less. And didn’t Xu Shizun get promoted in the army because of the Tang Family’s connections and because he is a decent guy who respected his wife and thus convinced Tang Guo’s parents to invest in his career? Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.
But it could never be Chen Ying’s fault that every man she’s with doesn’t live up to her expectations. *sarcasm*
If she’d just stop relying on men and on herself with all the knowledge of the future she has, she’d do fine. But she has to blame everyone else for her problems. 🙄
