Before the homeroom teacher could say anything, Qin Fen had already spoken loudly, “Top thirty in the grade and still acting modest? You need our Xiao Huihui to tutor you? Xiao Huihui’s official partner is me. If you don’t believe me, ask him whether he agrees to sit with you.”
The homeroom teacher had a good temper, and Qin Fen had never been too restrained when speaking to him.
Seeing the topic shift to herself, Jiang Chan frowned. “Qin Fen is fine as my deskmate. I’m used to it. It’s already been two years. There’s no need to change.”
The homeroom teacher nodded approvingly. What mattered most was Jiang Chan’s opinion. Since she disagreed, he would not force the issue. In his eyes, Jiang Chan was far more important than Song Miao.
That was the privilege of a top student.
Since Song Miao had openly requested to sit with Jiang Chan, the homeroom teacher had to consider her opinion as well. In the end, a boy seated to Jiang Chan’s right front was moved away, and Song Miao became Qin Fen’s desk in front.
The boy was displeased. Sitting close to Jiang Chan, this academic prodigy, was a benefit in itself. Yet today his seat had been taken by a girl. He shot Song Miao several irritated looks.
Song Miao did not care. As long as her goal was achieved, what did others matter?
After Song Miao moved to the desk in front of Jiang Chan, Jiang Chan felt her days grow more difficult. She had already made efforts to keep her distance, yet Song Miao persisted.
Every morning Song Miao brought her breakfast, even though Jiang Chan never touched it. During physical education class, Song Miao stood at the edge of the field cheering for her. Afterward she would offer water and towels.
Jiang Chan was speechless. What exactly did fate like about Jiang Yuhui? If necessary, she could change it. She was a girl and had no interest in romance with another girl. Not to mention the original owner’s task. Whenever she saw Song Miao, she wanted to detour.
If one approach failed, another would be found. After persuading the homeroom teacher, Jiang Chan simply chose to study at home. She would return only for the mock exams.
Once Jiang Chan began studying at home, resentment flared.
Previously, during evening self study sessions, Jiang Chan would stand at the front and explain problems to her classmates. She had a talent for teaching, and many relied on her guidance.
When she left, everyone felt as if their pillar was gone. Their frustration shifted toward Song Miao. Some parents with influence even quietly approached the homeroom teacher, suggesting Song Miao be transferred elsewhere.
The homeroom teacher felt a headache coming on. He had not expected Song Miao to stir up so much trouble. But in the final year of high school, classes were no longer reshuffled. The only thing he could do was move Song Miao to a seat beside the podium.
It was a designated seat for diligent students. Now Song Miao and Jiang Chan were separated by what felt like mountains and rivers. One near the podium, the other in the last row by the window. It was no longer easy for Song Miao to approach her.
The moment Song Miao was moved, Jiang Chan returned to school the next day. She had little choice. Almost the entire class had urged her to come back. Without her presence, they felt uneasy. Perhaps that was the confidence a top student gave them.
Everyone knew Jiang Chan disliked Song Miao, so they consciously kept the two apart.
Watching Jiang Yuhui surrounded by classmates, Song Miao clenched her draft paper tightly.
She had indeed been too impatient.
Seeing Jiang Yuhui refuse even to glance in her direction, she suddenly wondered whether she had been wrong all along. Jiang Yuhui was no longer the same person. She had realized that long ago.
The one she was attached to was the Jiang Yuhui who had loved her deeply and without regret. Not the Jiang Chan before her now, who would not even spare her a look.
Song Miao let out a soft laugh, laughing at her own obsession over the past three years since her rebirth.
She cast one final glance toward Jiang Chan before lowering her head to her reference materials. Large tears fell onto the paper, quickly soaking it.
She had only wanted to make amends. At the end of her previous life, she had finally realized that wealth, status, and power could not compare to sincere love.
She felt regret. She even began to believe in karma. Was it because she had wronged Jiang Yuhui and the Jiang family in her previous life that, even after being granted another chance, heaven had taken Jiang Yuhui’s feelings away?
Meanwhile, Jiang Chan felt refreshed. Song Miao seemed to have given up. For several days she no longer hovered nearby. Even the air felt clearer.
If only it had been like this from the start.
There was more to life than love. In Jiang Chan’s eyes, a second chance was precious. Why waste it entirely on romance? That was nothing more than a love obsessed mind.
Qin Fen had also been reborn, yet he was striving every day. A person’s life depended not on others’ affection but on their own effort. In the end, the only reliable support was oneself.
Jiang Chan did not dwell on why Song Miao had changed. As long as she stayed away, that was enough.
When she first accepted the original owner’s task, the request had been simply to stay away from Song Miao. To Jiang Chan, that seemed weak.
If someone wronged her, she would not let them off lightly. Yet the original owner had only wanted distance. In some ways, the original owner had been too soft.
But it was the original owner’s task. No matter how unwilling she felt, she would carry it out. Every time she saw Song Miao approach, she had wanted to kick her away.
Now that Song Miao appeared to have given up, Jiang Chan focused entirely on preparing for the college entrance examination. After all, she had declined guaranteed admission.
She had already experienced a final year of high school once before. Going through it again felt strangely nostalgic. People often said the final year was the hardest, yet also the most unforgettable.
Parents became tense and overprotective. Yet life in the Jiang household remained unchanged. Jiang Chan’s routine stayed steady.
Perhaps it was because of her consistent excellence, or perhaps because her parents were open minded. Given the Jiang family’s background, even if she somehow failed, her future would not be bleak.
Though that possibility was almost nonexistent. Everyone believed she would once again create a miracle in the college entrance examination. With her scores, competing for top national honors was more than feasible.
