“The Beast Tide has arrived.”
“The Beast Tide is here.”
Terrifying rumbling thundered in the distance. All the Beastmen present changed color, gripping sharpened wooden stakes in their hands. Every strong male Beastman stood outside the cave, staring grimly toward the area where the deep pits had been dug.
Above the pits, cut branches were laid as supports and covered with dry grass, making them look no different from the rest of the forest.
Although the rumbling in the distance sounded terrifying, it was still some distance away.
Every time the Beast Tide occurred, that horde of wild beasts of unknown origin would go mad, charging at people on sight, tearing and biting into flesh and blood.
Every tribe knew that the Beast Tide was extremely terrifying, yet no one understood why it happened once every year. Those beasts seemed able to locate them no matter what, bringing countless casualties.
Even though they were far better prepared this time, they were still anxious and afraid when facing the Beast Tide.
Ning Luo was placed inside the cave by Gaien. In order to prevent the Beastman race from dying out, females were always protected first. Male Beastmen were born to protect every female. This was their belief.
Taking advantage of everyone else being occupied, Tang Guo quietly climbed to the top of the mountain. Not long after, Yin Yao also came up and naturally sat beside her.
“Ah Guoguo.”
“Yes, High Priest. At a moment like this, when life and death are on the line, are you going to say something to me?” Tang Guo asked with a smile, her gaze fixed on the rumbling deep within the forest. Wherever the Beast Tide passed, clouds of dust rose, as if explosions were going off within the trees.
She watched the dust scatter in all directions. One mass of it was heading straight toward their mountain. Resting her chin on her hand, she grew thoughtful. The beasts could not see where they were, so how were they able to find their exact location every time? It was truly strange.
“Ah Guoguo, you’re distracted.”
Yin Yao reached out and tapped her forehead. His hand did not withdraw afterward. Instead, it rested on her head, gently stroking it, like he was petting a small cat.
“High Priest, don’t you have something important to tell me? For example…” Tang Guo’s lips curved upward. “You’re going to tell me who you want to mate with, right?”
Yin Yao’s lips stiffened. The atmosphere had been just right, yet Ah Guoguo had turned it into this. He felt both helpless and amused. This time, however, he did not avoid it. He pinched her cheek lightly, a faint smile appearing on his face.
“Yes,” he said.
Tang Guo’s eyes lit up, her smile widening. “Who is it?”
“Ah Guoguo.”
“Hm? High Priest, why are you calling me again?”
“It’s you, Ah Guoguo.” Yin Yao’s gaze softened. His palm covered the back of her head as he looked straight into her eyes and said seriously once more, “I’m saying that person is you, Ah Guoguo. Do you understand?”
Tang Guo could not ignore that sincerity. As the thunderous rumbling drew closer, a brilliant smile spread across her beautiful face. “I understand. That person is me, High Priest, right?”
“Yes. It’s you.”
Tang Guo let out a soft laugh and wrapped her arms around Yin Yao’s arm, tilting her head. “High Priest, you finally admitted it.”
“Ah Guoguo, you’re not sick, are you?”
“I am.” Tang Guo lifted her chin slightly. “I truly have an illness where if I don’t see the High Priest for even one day, my heart feels uncomfortable and I miss you terribly.”
Hearing this, Yin Yao laughed. He looked toward the dust drawing ever closer in the distance. “After the Beast Tide passes, I need to leave for a while.”
