“Xiao Guo, you’re really letting them go out?” Bai Wuqing had thought he understood her, at least a little. But the more he learned, the more he realized he didn’t understand her at all.
He had assumed she saved these people because she valued talent.
He thought she kept them in the Demon Sect to protect them while they grew.
But it seemed he had miscalculated. Some of these children were barely thirteen or fourteen, the youngest only seven, yet she had no hesitation in sending them out.
“They have to grow.”
“I’ve already taught them the basic survival skills they need. If they still end up getting themselves killed, then it just means they weren’t capable enough. If they really die, as their master, I’ll avenge them.”
That was their fate. She couldn’t always be there to protect them. That wasn’t how they would grow.
What she gave them was a chance. If they seized it, they were smart. If they failed, then there was nothing she could do. She had no special attachment to them.
At most, she had only saved them because of Feng Feiling. They were just tools to provoke her. And in exchange, she had given them a second chance at life. That was their payment.
She didn’t need anything from them. The only thing she required was that they never betray her.
“Xiao Guo, what exactly are you trying to do?”
This time, Bai Wuqing was completely serious. He could tell that everything she did had a clear purpose. But who was all of this aimed at?
He had a strange feeling, as if once she completed whatever she was doing, she would disappear.
This inexplicable feeling wasn’t something he dismissed. On the contrary, it filled him with fear.
He had believed that with their long lifespans, he had plenty of time to get to know her, to grow closer to her, to win her over. But now, he was beginning to realize that he might never truly understand who she was. Every time he thought he had figured her out, he would discover yet another side of her.
He had approached her, and he had succeeded.
But she didn’t seem to care. She didn’t care about his presence, didn’t care about the affection he showed her. That left him feeling powerless.
He had thought time would be enough to move her heart. It had been more than a year now, yet he was more certain than ever that her heart was as cold as iron. Could he really change that? Even he didn’t know.
Sometimes, the way she looked at him with such indifference was chilling, like an eternal frost that would never melt.
She smiled at people, but it was a smile that hid a blade.
She never hesitated in her methods. As long as it achieved her goal, nothing else mattered.
She didn’t care about others’ opinions. She did whatever she wanted.
The more he realized this, the more he felt that the Xiao Guo from the past must have been trapped inside a shell, unable to move.
Now, she had broken free. She was no longer bound.
And in the past, that shell had been him.
“Elder Bai is so curious about what I’m doing?” Tang Guo let out a mocking laugh, stepping closer to him. Her flawless, delicate face was now right in front of him, her beauty dazzling enough to make Bai Wuqing momentarily dizzy. “Obviously, I want revenge.”
“Revenge?”
“Feng Feiling?” Bai Wuqing quickly pieced it together. The only person Tang Guo had a grudge against was Feng Feiling.
Tang Guo chuckled softly. “That’s right.”
“Everything she wants, I will destroy. Anything connected to her, I will do the opposite of what she desires.”
She looked up at him again, her cold gaze meeting his as the corners of her lips curved slightly. “Are you surprised? That I’m like this? That I’m full of calculations, not some simple person? That I meticulously plan everything, using so many people just to achieve my goal?
Someone like me isn’t the type Elder Bai should like. You should prefer someone pure and untouched, like a lotus blooming in clear water, free from any stain.”
