Countless people had yet to process what was happening and simply stared blankly as the messenger delivered the urgent report to the city gates.
What?
Thinking back, they all wore expressions of disbelief. The Tianqin Kingdom was surrounded? Even the imperial city was under siege?
Is this some kind of joke?
Tianqin is a superpower, a massive nation. How could it possibly be surrounded?
And those troops outside the imperial city, where did they come from? How could they arrive without anyone noticing?
This must be a joke. It has to be someone playing tricks on them.
At that moment, they suddenly heard a loud boom. The massive tremor caused everyone in the imperial city to panic, their faces turning pale as they struggled to steady themselves. Could it be an earthquake?
Soon, they realized it wasn’t an earthquake. The crowd at the rear parted, and the sound of wagon wheels and horse hooves grew louder as it approached. When they finally saw what it was, a wave of dizziness hit them.
An army!
Where did such a massive army come from?
What were those pitch-black cylindrical objects mounted on the carts aimed at them? Why did they feel so terrifying?
The entire city, whether commoners or nobles, hurriedly stepped aside, allowing the massive troops to advance to the foot of the palace gates. At this moment, they saw a tall figure riding a magnificent horse at the front of the army. The rider was fully armored, their face obscured, but the silhouette seemed strangely familiar.
However, with the face hidden and so much time having passed, they couldn’t immediately recall where they had seen this figure before.
“Little Guo’er.”
Suddenly, the person called out, their voice deep and resonant, tinged with both longing and affection. “Father is here. My Guo’er has suffered enough. From now on, no one will dare bully my Guo’er again.”
That voice, everyone recognized it.
They were stunned. Wasn’t this General Tang’s voice?
The court officials’ legs trembled uncontrollably. Why? Wasn’t General Tang supposed to have died in battle years ago? Yet even after all these years, his reputation still struck fear into their hearts, leaving them speechless.
If this man was indeed General Tang, they glanced at each other, then silently lowered their heads.
General Tang removed his helmet, revealing his true face. With a look of fatherly love, he gazed up at the woman on the city wall. “Little Guo’er, come down. From now on, your father will back you up. No one will dare to wrong you.”
“Father.” Tang Guo’s face lit up with a smile as she called out sweetly. The obedient demeanor she displayed now was a stark contrast to the domineering imperial concubine she had been moments ago. Tugging at Xuanyuan Mie’s sleeve, she said, “A Mie, take me down. I want to properly greet my father.”
Xuanyuan Mie ignored everyone else, wrapped his arm around her waist, and leaped down from the city wall. Landing before General Tang, his previously mischievous and roguish demeanor replaced with one of respect. Bowing slightly, he greeted, “Father-in-law, I hope you’ve been well.”
General Tang let out a cold snort but said nothing more. Instead, he stepped forward and embraced Tang Guo. After so many years, his little Guo’er could finally live as freely as she pleased.
Now, he had the ability to protect her. He no longer feared letting her do as she wished in Tianqin, even if it meant throwing her weight around.
He felt no guilt at all. It was the Xuanyuan royal family and Xuanyuan Mo who had wronged the Tang family and his little Guo’er. As long as those people had the sense to behave, he wouldn’t harm Tianqin. All he wanted was for his daughter to live comfortably and enjoy herself in the harem.
“You’ve been wronged.”
Tang Guo shook her head with a smile. “No, Father. Your daughter isn’t someone who suffers losses. With A Mie by my side, I’m very happy. From now on, I’ll live better than anyone else. You don’t need to worry.”
General Tang’s voice choked slightly as he gently patted her head. “If this is what my little Guo’er wants, then I will always be your support. Whatever you wish to do, just go and do it.”
