Ning Luo stayed by Black Wolf’s side every day, offering ideas for the tribe and setting up various traps.
At first, Tang Guo would sit nearby and watch them work. After a few days, however, no one paid much attention anymore. Tang Guo, who had always been watching them before, was no longer in her dwelling and no longer watching them either.
Only Yin Yao and Aoli, the two who paid the closest attention to Tang Guo, noticed something was off. Yin Yao was the first to notice. Aoli discovered it later when she went to look for Tang Guo to ask how to make meat soup taste better, only to find that she was gone.
By the time the sun was close to setting, Tang Guo came back. When asked where she had gone, she said she had gone out to play.
Aoli was easy to fool. Yin Yao was not.
The next day, when Tang Guo went out again, Yin Yao chose to secretly follow her. He had barely taken a few steps when Tang Guo turned around and stared straight at him.
“I’m worried you might be in danger,” Yin Yao said.
“Ah Guoguo, what are you planning to do?”
Tang Guo walked over and grabbed his arm. “High Priest, do you want to know?”
“If you’re willing to tell me,” Yin Yao replied.
The corners of Tang Guo’s lips curved upward. What a tactful way to put it. If she wanted to say it, she would. If she did not, he would not force her. He really was an adorable fellow.
“I’m going up the mountain,” Tang Guo said, pointing toward the mountaintop. “High Priest, do you want to come along?”
Yin Yao naturally did not refuse. He also wanted to see what she was planning to do. He did not question why Ah Guoguo had been slowly changing. The changes did not feel abrupt, but if one looked carefully, it was obvious that she was changing more with each passing day.
When they reached the mountaintop, Yin Yao saw large and small rolling stones placed inside a pit at the summit. Regardless of size, if these stones rolled down the mountain, whether it was Beastmen or wild beasts, they could easily be injured.
“These are…” he began.
“Preparation for the worst, High Priest,” Tang Guo said. “The cave below probably won’t be enough to help us avoid the Beast Tide.”
Yin Yao looked at the little female in front of him and truly did not know what to say. No matter how good the traps below were, they could not compare to these rolling stones. Once the stones were released, even wild beasts would likely flee in panic.
“There’s actually an even better method,” Tang Guo added.
“What method?” Yin Yao asked.
Tang Guo looked at the busy tribe members below the mountain. “Before the wild beasts arrive, dig pits and plant sharp wooden spikes inside them. The pits must be dug very deep, deep enough that the beasts cannot leap out. When the beasts charge in, they will fall into the pits. Even if they do not die, they will be badly injured.”
“Sharp wooden spikes are not easy to make,” Yin Yao said. “If they are too thin, they will be useless. Wild beasts have thick hides, so they won’t be injured.”
“I already said the pits need to be dug deeper,” Tang Guo replied. “As for sharp spikes, I have a solution.”
She turned around and dug into the soil, pulling out a large, rusted blade that looked like it had been buried underground for a long time. “This will work.”
Yin Yao took the blade with some surprise and swung it at a wooden stick. Even though it was rusty and had been buried for a long time, it cut through the stick with ease.
“Is this enough?” Tang Guo asked.
“It is,” Yin Yao said, a hint of delight flashing across his face. “With this blade and Ah Guoguo’s method, we can definitely withstand the Beast Tide. Now we just need people to dig the pits around the area.”
If they dug a continuous trench around the mountain and filled it with sharpened stakes, no matter how many wild beasts came, they would have only one fate.
“Then what about these stones?” Yin Yao asked.
“If the beasts rush in, we push the stones down and crush them,” Tang Guo said. “There’s no need to hide inside the mountain. The mountain itself is the safest place.”
