Whether the Song family was willing or not, they had no choice but to accept their fate. The Song elders exhausted all their connections just to get Song Rui and Song Xuan back into government jobs, but there was basically no possibility of promotion.

“Song Rui went home and had a big fight with Song Shengrui and Zhou Yafeng. He said if the Zhou family hadn’t offended someone, if Zhou Yafeng hadn’t made mistakes, if Song Shengrui hadn’t messed up, how could their family have ended up in such a miserable state?”

“He won’t come.” Song Ye said with a relaxed tone. “He already understands.”
When the court ruled that he and Song Qing were to provide a fixed monthly support payment to Song Shengrui, he gave it willingly. He understood very well that even with that money, Song Shengrui wouldn’t live a good life.
On the contrary, it would make him even more despairing. Song Shengrui would come to realize what kind of consequences awaited him for having hurt their mother.
He would also come to understand that looking to Song Ye and Song Qing would only result in his unfilial younger son endlessly exploiting him.
Sure enough, Song Shengrui never came to find Song Ye again until the day he died, and he never went to Song Qing either.
After Song Shengrui’s death, the one who fell into the deepest despair was Song Rui. Without the money from Song Ye and Song Qing, their family fell into a serious crisis.
