Jiang Chan held An An’s little hand. “I understand your difficulties. Do not worry. At the latest by this New Year, I will definitely gather enough for Kang Kang’s surgery.”
Dean Fan immediately stopped in her tracks. “Xiao Chan, you must not do anything you should not do. Where are you going to get the money?”
Seeing that there were not many people around, Jiang Chan simply explained it to her. “The school’s scholarships are very generous. This time they gave me fifty thousand because I entered the finals.”
“If I make it into the winter camp, that will be one hundred thousand. If I can join the national team and win an award, the scholarship will double. I registered for two subjects, and each has the same reward, so you do not need to worry.”
Dean Fan felt a burst of joy, but then frowned again. “I do not understand those competitions, but the national team sounds very formidable. Xiao Chan, can you really do it? Do not put too much pressure on yourself.”
Jiang Chan blinked. “Do you not know me? If I were not confident, I would not have agreed. Just relax. I will take care of the orphanage matters. You just focus on the barbecue stall and do not worry about anything else.”
An An said, “Sister Jiang Chan is the best. If she says she can do it, then she definitely can!”
There were really no troublemakers in the orphanage. Every child was well behaved and could help with tasks within their ability. Besides, Jiang Chan had grown up there. The orphanage was her home. When the family was in difficulty, she could not just stand by and do nothing.
The four of them slowly walked away. A few seconds after they left, a lean figure stepped out from behind a nearby pillar. He narrowed his eyes in the direction Jiang Chan had gone. “Jiang Chan? So she is Jiang Chan.”
Wang Runhui had not intentionally eavesdropped on their conversation. He had been behind the pillar discussing gaming plans with his classmates, but he ended up hearing what Jiang Chan said.
He took another careful look at the small figure in the distance, then whistled as he walked into the hospital. The silhouette looked quite handsome, if one ignored the insulated lunch container in his hand.
He knocked on the office door. Seeing Doctor Wang look up from his documents, the boy walked in with one hand in his pocket. “Director Wang, still busy?”
Doctor Wang looked up and smiled gently. “Why are you here? Should you not be going out to relax during your break?”
Wang Runhui walked in and placed the thermal container in front of him. “Mom was worried about your health and specifically sent me to bring you food. She even told me to make sure you finish it.”
Doctor Wang took off his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Alright. Sit and rest for a while. Wait until I finish eating before you leave.”
Thinking of Jiang Chan and her group from earlier, and recalling his father’s worried expression, Wang Runhui cautiously asked, “I ran into a classmate at the entrance just now. What is her situation? Why did she come here for treatment?”
Doctor Wang did not even raise his head. “What classmate?”
“The one with an elderly lady, a young girl, and two little boys.” Wang Runhui leaned over the desk, staring at him without blinking.
“What exactly is her situation? Is it serious?”
To be honest, he did not know why Jiang Chan had come here, but she looked perfectly healthy. He had noticed that one of the little boys looked weak and frail.
Most likely, the problem was with that boy. Thinking of the hospital’s well known cardiology department, Wang Runhui felt he had guessed part of the truth, but he still wanted confirmation from Doctor Wang.
Doctor Wang glanced at him calmly. “I have professional ethics. I did examine the group you mentioned, but I cannot tell you the specifics.”
Wang Runhui rested his chin on his hands. “Then let me guess. The one who is sick is the youngest child, right?”
Doctor Wang sighed and pushed aside the lunchbox after only a few bites. “Sigh, children from poor families grow up early. None of them have it easy.”
“Wait a minute.” Doctor Wang suddenly frowned suspiciously. “You study at the provincial capital high school. That girl is from City High in the neighboring city. How is she your classmate?”
Wang Runhui raised his eyebrows. “She is very famous. Almost all the high schools in the province know her name. She has been in the competition class for less than three months and has already made it into the finals.”
“I heard she is only in her first year, and both her physics and biology made it into the finals. We are all guessing that she will likely have a spot in this year’s winter camp. She is very impressive.”
“I remember you are already in your second year, and you only made it into the finals. You have studied one year longer than her.” Doctor Wang raised an eyebrow, sparing no effort in criticizing his own son.
“Dad, life is already hard. Do not expose my shortcomings. She is a genius. I am just slightly smarter than the average person.” Wang Runhui slumped in his chair and wailed.
“I happened to overhear their conversation just now. How much does that child’s surgery cost?”
“It is not a small amount. For an orphanage, it is already a very large sum. Altogether, it will cost about this much.” Doctor Wang raised a hand. “I have already reduced the fees as much as possible. Otherwise it would be even more.”
“An orphanage? Jiang Chan is actually from an orphanage? That is unbelievable. A girl that outstanding should have been adopted long ago, right?”
“Perhaps. Just keep this to yourself and do not spread it around.” Doctor Wang reminded him, worried that his lively son might talk carelessly.
“No wonder she said she would take responsibility for the surgery fees.” Wang Runhui muttered. “Knowledge really changes fate. Studying changes life. Technology can bring wealth. Do not worry, Dad. I will not say anything.”
Before Doctor Wang could respond, the boy quickly moved to a chair, took out his phone, and started chatting with his friends.
Wang Runhui only felt emotional about Jiang Chan’s situation for a moment before putting it aside. In the end, the reason he cared so much was because Jiang Chan’s reputation was too well known.
Jiang Chan had no idea that her name had already spread to other cities, although it was only within student circles. The general public still did not know. She was packing her luggage, preparing to check out and return.
If she hurried back that evening, she could still make it in time for the competition class. Now that she needed to gather money for Kang Kang’s surgery, Jiang Chan became even more focused on the competition. Even at the highest level, she still had to keep pushing herself.
Moreover, Jiang Chan never considered herself particularly smart. She had simply, by coincidence, gained much more time than others to study and learn those things.
